Democratic Student Policy in Educational Matters

Distance learning and improved teaching methods for rural areas and students with children.

The University of Iceland for all citizens.

Increased recording of lectures.

Pressure should be placed on the school to increase the availability of distance learning, not just individual courses, but also entire study programs.

Medical entrance exams will now also be held in Akureyri, and we intend to fight for more locations in rural areas.

Democratic Student Policy on Háma Issues

The continued fight for Háma must be ensured.

Háma in Eirberg was supposed to close, just as Háma was closed in Oddi and Háskólabíó when Vaka was a minority. Háma in Eirberg is still open and Vaka plans to continue to protect Háma's outlets.

In the next election period, the Student Council will appoint members to the board of FS for the next two years. It is important that board members are who are appointed have the operational health of Háma as their guiding principle.

We need to continue to pressure FS to keep its outlets open and have their products cheaper.

Democratic Student Policy on Parking Issues

No parking fees have been introduced during this election period. We will continue to pressure the university and the government so that students do not have to pay more to attend school.

Prevent a reduction in parking spaces while other infrastructure is not in place.

If parking fees are introduced, we will ensure a fair and efficient system that is as affordable as possible for students.

Democratic Student Policy Regarding Social Issues

We changed the operating format of Oktoberfest and multiplied the profit. Profits that, if the previous situation had been maintained, would have gone to parties outside the town.

Increased income from Oktoberfest meant that we were able to hold the SHI Annual Festival, for all students, for the first time since before the Economics Boom.

Increased income from Oktoberfest also meant that SHI was able to increase in payments from the Student Fund. Thus, direct grants to student organizations were multiplied, which means more money for the student organizations that know best how to improve social life in their departments.

We intend to continue to strengthen the social life at the University of Iceland as we have done this year, because a good social life makes a good university.

Democratic Student Policy in the Education Fund and the Icelandic Institute of Higher Education

No parking fees have been introduced during the election period.

The majority of Vaka created the position of a wage representative at the SHI office to assist students in the labor market, which is the first time in many years that the office's services have been expanded.

Vaka has campaigned for reforms to the Student Education Fund (MSNM), with a particular emphasis on increasing the cost of living.

As soon as the results of the 2024 student council elections were announced, representatives of Vaka's new majority went to a meeting with the then Minister of Higher Education and presented our priorities in education funding matters.

The result of the meeting was that there was common ground on raising the income tax exemption threshold, and shortly afterwards, on April 3, the income tax exemption threshold was raised to 2.2 million.

A bill is now before the Parliament that will improve MSNM services, but more can be done if it is to be sufficient and the maintenance allowance still needs to be increased.

There appears to be fertile ground for change under the new minister, after the next budget, but the fight needs to continue to increase the living allowance, make capital relief more equitable, and establish a dual income tax exemption.
